At Mickleburgh we want to make musical instruments both accessible and affordable for everyone, therefore we offer several different ways to buy instruments, equipment and accessories.
We offer finance options through three different options, all of which allow you to spread the cost of buying an instrument into several smaller payments. Take It Away
‘Take It Away’ provides interest-free loans up to £5000 for musical instruments, equipment, software and tuition. In short, it gives music-makers the backing they need.
Interest-free credit for people in England who are over 18 years old, or over 18 and buying an instrument for a child under 18.

What is it?
The ‘Take it away’ scheme offers interest-free loans to buy musical instruments, equipment and accessories.
Mickleburgh are delighted to be one of the approved retailers. This means any product purchased in store between the cost of £150 to £5,000 can be financed in conjunction with the ‘Take it away’ scheme.
How does it work?
Take It Away is operated by Creative United, a not-for-profit organisation, funded by the Art Council England.
The scheme is designed to increase access to buying musical instruments and equipment whilst supporting specialist music shops, like Mickleburgh, who serve as an important part of local community music serves regionally.
Credit for the scheme is provided by Omni Capital Retail Finance Qualifying criteria applies. To find out more about the scheme, give us a call, send us an email or come into store.
Am I eligible?
- ‘Take it away’ has loans for musicians of all ages. The core scheme is open to people in England who are over 18 years old, or over 18 and buying an instrument for a child under 18.
- You may be asked if you are buying for a child or a young person when you apply for a loan.
- You will need to be a permanent resident in the UK with a regular income of £5,000 per year.
- You’ll also need a bank or building society account that’s capable of handling direct debit payments. Remember, loans are subject to status. Terms and conditions apply.
How do I apply?
Simply come into our Bristol store with proof of ID and income and speak to a member to apply. All we need is a few details from you in order to perform a credit check to get your credit approved.
Once the credit has been approved, we set up your direct debit for the further 9 or 18 payments. Then all you need to pay is a minimum 10% down payment for your instrument, up to the total purchase price of £5,000.
Next, take away your instrument home. It’s that simple!

An email will be sent to you with a link to the loan application. The deposit can be paid in store, via Bank Transfer or through PayPal (debit and credit cards can be used).

Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme (AIPS)
This is a scheme which enables pupils receiving music lessons at LEA maintained schools or establishments to purchase musical instruments VAT free. However, this is a voluntary scheme and not all schools, music services/authorities will participate.
What is it?
This is a scheme which enables pupils receiving music lessons at LEA maintained schools or establishments to purchase musical instruments VAT free. However, this is a voluntary scheme and not all schools, music services/authorities will participate.
How does it work?
- Once the parent/pupil has chosen an instrument, they should ask the school to place an official order with Mickleburgh Ltd.
- The parent pays the school the ex-VAT price for the instrument plus any administration charge.
- We supply the instrument to the school.
- The school reclaim the VAT on the instrument in the same was an any other purchases they make.
- The school gives the instrument to the student.
Am I eligible?
- The student must be attending an LEA-maintained school.
- The school (or LEA) must place an order for the instrument, take delivery and be invoiced.
- The transaction between the student and school (or LEA) must take place on their premises in a room normally used for teaching.
- The instrument must be appropriate to the students’ needs and ability.
- The instrument must be portable and used for regular weekly lessons on school (or LEA) premises.
- The LEA must sell the instrument to the student at or below cost.
- Pupils of independent schools would not ordinarily benefit from the scheme – unless they receive regular tuition from the local authorities music service.
